recover_mp4 can come in handy if you want to recover audio and video streams from corrupted or damaged files. While its name suggests otherwise, recover_mp4 does not support MP4 files only, as it can process MOV and 3GP media files. recover_mp4 can recover H.264/AVC stream from unfinalized MP4/MOV files without (or empty) header. You may got the unfinalized file in case of damaging camcorder during recording or such. This utility has been tested with files recorded by GoPro, but it may work with other camcorders too. Command line tool. Given this is a portable tool, no installation is required to use it and no changes are made to your PC.


recover_mp4 comes with support for AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265 videos, as well as MP3, AAC, RAW, ADPCM, and PCM (LE, BE, float) audio streams.

It does not require installation, but you can only launch it via the command console. In other words, it does not feature a standard interface. However, all the available commands are shown as you launch it, alongside explanations for each option, usage examples to help you get started, and step-by-step instructions that tell you what you should do to get your multimedia files back.

To clear things up, recover_mp4 cannot rebuild the original media files. What it does is analyze a previous valid file and generate header files, then recover media streams from the damaged file. Note that the HDR files must be present for the application to proceed to data recovering, which means you first have to analyze a good file that is similar to the broken one, meaning with the same bitrate and resolution.

You will need a third party tool to recreate the original file using the audio and video streams recover_mp4 extracts. Recommendations of such tools are provided in the instructions.

There are various options you can use to customize the file analysis. You can configure recover_mp4 to read a file starting with a specific position and also set an end position. AVC NAL units with a size larger than a specific value can be optionally ignored.

Depending on your recorder, you can opt for certain templates and use them to recover data. Generic HEVC / H.265 templates are also available. Both audio and video header files (HDR) are saved in the current location of recover_mp4.

Recovering audio and video streams requires you to enter the path of the corrupt file, along with the name of the .H264 and AAC files that will be generated.

recover_mp4 can provide a starting point for recovering video and audio content in case your camcorder broke while recording.

However, it doesn't exactly finish the recovery process, as you need a third-party tool to rebuild the original files. Nevertheless, those of you who have the patience to extract the media streams and then re-create the damaged file manually are surely going to enjoy using recover_mp4.
