Advanced Renamer 3.66

Advanced Renamer is a freeware program for naming a large batch of files or folders in a snap. It uses several methods for creating the new names and it has tools for multimedia files like photo and music files. With Advanced Renamer you can construct new file names by adding, removing, replacing, changing case, or giving the file a brand new name based on known information from the file. Before performing the operations on the files you can verify that the output will be correct and if you perform the rename and regret it, you can undo the the complete batch.

Advanced Renamer is a Windows application developed to rename multiple files at once.
In addition, the program can be used to move or copy entire batches of files or folders to another folder, all from a very well-organized and clean interface.

The GUI we are talking about however is based on a multi-panel design, so rookies may not know where to start at the first glance.

Advanced Renamer's up-to-date interface features tabs, resizable panels, and an easily customized, spreadsheetlike main list view displaying selected files and actions. This program offers choices within choices, with plenty of default options yet many customizable features, too.

Selecting the Thumbnails button toggles the display into thumbnail mode, which we feel is essential for handling image files. The File Info pane has an image preview window, too, for a more detailed preview.

There are separate tabs for renaming files and folders, but the functionality they offer is essentially the same. Advanced Renamer makes it easy to select either single images or files or whole directories.

After adding the files or folders to be renamed to the process queue, Advanced Renamer requires users to configure new renaming methods, which include options such as remove pattern, renumber, replace, add, list, trim, new name and case, attributes and timestamp.

Of course, each of these options comes with its very own pack of settings, so the “replacing” tool for example asks you for the text to be replaced and the one to replace with, enable case sensitive and use regular expressions.

Advanced Renamer is most of the time a resource-friendly application, but we’ve discovered some problems during our testing. Whenever we tried adding more than 100 items to the file queue, the program crashed on Windows 7 workstations.

On the other hand, it works much smoother on older Windows iterations where it processes all files in no-time, without any issue when it comes to the number of files you wish to rename.

With so many great free tools like Advanced Renamer a download away, it just makes good sense to try them before buying commercial software. It's hard to imagine what the average user would need in the way of a renamer that it doesn't have.
